About Mitchi

The game

Mitchi is a fast dice game for two or more players. Each round, you roll to avoid the worst hand. Whoever ends up with it takes points. The player with the fewest points wins. You need two dice, a pen and paper, and at least one other player.

Where it came from

I learnt Mitchi while I was living in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in southern Spain. A group of us used to meet at La Gitana after work and play on the bar top.

My cousin taught us, and it caught on quickly. I don't know where he learnt it, and I've never come across it anywhere else. I couldn't find the rules written down either, so I've put them here for anyone who wants to learn.

Why it stuck

It's easy to learn and quick to play. Rounds are fast, and you only need two dice and somewhere to roll them.

It's tactical too. Everyone can see the scores, so every round matters, and once the Mitchis start rolling, the pot soon climbs.

Related games

Mitchi is not the only game where a 2 and a 1 is the best hand. While building this site I came across a couple of others, and there are probably more.

• Mia: the dice are rolled in secret under a cup, and players call out their hand. They can bluff.
• Mexico: players roll to avoid the lowest hand, losing a life each time, until one player is left.
